Salma & Beyonce Join Gucci’s Chime for Change Charity to Help Empower Girls Globally
None of Us Move Forward If Half Of Us Are Left Back. Those words are the manifesto for Gucci’s Chime for Change, a global initiative to help empower young girls and women in every nation. Launched yesterday at TEDxWomen luncheon in Los Angeles by its co-founders, Salma Hayek Pinault, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Frida Giannini (Creative Director of Gucci), the initiative aims to support empowerment projects for women and girls across the globe. Those projects will fall under three umbrellas: health, education and justice. The campaign will raise funds for programs addressing these initiatives. “By promoting and funding progress in the areas of education, health and justice, we can change the prospects for girls and women, and those girls and women can change the world,” says Frida.
“I am proud to be joining the growing international movement on behalf of girls and women around the world,” says Salma in a statement. “I believe that by working together we can change the course of history to ensure that girls and women are empowered to realize their potential and thrive.” Beyoncé adds, “I have always felt strongly about equal opportunity for women. Girls have to be taught from early on that they are strong and capable of being anything they want to be. ”It’s up to us to change the statistics for women around the world. I’m honored to be in the company of women who live fearlessly and set an example for the next generation of young ladies.”
The luncheon capped off with a presentation of The Supreme Price, a film that chronicles the story of Hafsat Abiola, a daughter of Nigeria’s first Democratically-elected President. Following his election, there was a military coup and her mother as assassinated. This film highlights her daughter’s quest to help the women of Nigeria. Directed by Joanna Lipper, this is one of the first films Gucci has sponsored on behalf of its movement, Chime for Change. Salma will produce and narrate six short films for the initiative, and Beyoncé will provide the music. Other stars who are backing Chime For Change include actresses Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.
The luxury designer company posted this on their site:
Throughout history, women have done things differently.
When we need to get something done, we do it together.
With each new generation our story has spread wider.
The voices telling it braver, more powerful.
But the story is far from over. These are extraordinary times.
Thanks to technology, women across the world have the ability to connect in ways unimaginable to those who went before us.
We believe that connection empowers us.
We are proud to be joining a growing movement of many.
The young and the old, women and men, from all cultures and all walks of life who want to see change.
Not one, but billions of voices calling for the empowerment of girls and women. Empowerment through education, through health, through justice.
This is about hearing a call— to join us wherever you are. About raising an alarm—drawing attention where there is work to be done.
Our issues are the world’s issues.
This is the sound of courage.
This is the sound of progress.
This is the sound of change.

I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I obviously was caught off-guard by the question but don’t get me wrong, I understand that my answer was totally stupid and out of place. I can’t say sorry enough about that. Most importantly, I want to apologize to Tiger and anybody that I would have offended by the comment I made and, you know, just to say that I feel sick about it.”
